About this work
Viewed from the back, a figure in a high-collared ivory garment has, in place of a head, an open wire globe of thin golden bands; inside the sphere a small, glass-like pane reflects a paned window and warm interior light. Three plump white doves perch along the rings, one on top and two to either side, against a plain black ground.
The garment is painted in soft grey-white tones with fluid, draped folds, while the metal rings are rendered in warm ochre and copper with sharper highlights. The tiny reflected window breaks the darkness with a cool patch of light, and the calm doves against the void give the scene a quiet, contemplative hush.
